REVIEW
BUMS is a very in your face, provocative, and heavily dialogue driven script. It has unnecessarily strong language and is often times raunchy, but does redeems itself in its reflection of the good and bad of relationships. It's a film from our Canadian neighbors (yes, their "out" and "about" sounds like "oot" and "aboot"), the Butler Brothers, Jason and Brett, who not only wrote and directed but who also star.
This film does a fine job of humorously focusing on the polar ends of relationships. A story of arrested juvenile adolescence in which Jason's 20 something's character, Dave, is just getting out of a long-term relationship while Brett's 20 something's character, Don, is just beginning a new romance. Though leaning more to the male perspective due to the writer being male, the film stacks the male and female perspectives against each other nicely throughout. The film allows the audience to laugh at each side's perceived truths and fantasies. Despite working 20-hour days with unpaid actors and a production budget of only $2,000, the movie was fluid. The script has moments of great quick wit, which keeps the audience tuned in to hear what's coming next. And though some shots are held too long, which slows the pacing a bit, the Butler Bros effectively utilize split screen editing to keep the viewer's eye busy and entertained. The overall quality of the production was impressive based on the small budget. The movie also features a compatible soundtrack. "Wake up Dave. That's what a relationship is. Up and downs. Good times, bad times." - Dave and his soon to be ex-girlfriend, Jill
